In 1986, Mayor Joe Riley had a bold vision for the future of Charleston and set out on a journey to transform what was once an empty parking lot into what we know today as The Charleston Place. Looking back, the creation of The Charleston Place was a turning point in our beautiful city’s history– one that helped put Charleston on the map as a beloved and award-winning destination.

In 2021, Beemok Hospitality Collection (BHC) acquired The Charleston Place and transitioned the hotel into a locally owned and operated independent hotel. At that time, BHC also committed to significantly invest in the landmark hotel to maintain its iconic position within the community.

CP Reimagined will transform nearly all spaces within the hotel, including the lobby, porte cochere, Market Street Circle courtyard, all 433 guest rooms, Club Lounge, Spa, pool, fitness center, food and beverage venues, retail outlets, and meeting and event spaces. With careful consideration, we have chosen to transform the hotel in phases to minimize the disruption of services to our guests and community. The hotel intends to remain open throughout all projects, and any impacted parties will be notified prior to arrival.

When will the reimagination begin?
The Charleston Place has begun its multi-phased reimagination with exterior enhancements, including cleaning the building’s brick facade, replacing shutters and installing new awnings on the ground level. Beginning in late May 2024, the second floor banquet and event spaces will close for a complete redesign, with estimated completion in September 2024.
What will be included in the reimagination?
The reimagination will touch nearly every aspect of the hotel, including the main entrance and arrival experience, the lobby and public spaces, spa and fitness center, meeting facilities, guest rooms and suites, food and beverage outlets, retail spaces and the Market Street Circle courtyard. Detailed information will be provided on this page once design plans have been finalized and approved.
What is currently happening as part of the reimagination?
The reimagination of The Charleston Place hotel has begun, with work happening in select areas from 8am-6pm, Monday to Saturday. The pool, pool deck and The Spa locker room amenities will be closed from July 8th, 2024, while we transform the space. We anticipate reopening the pool area in spring 2025.
How long will the reimagination take?
This is a multi-year reimagination with many factors that may impact the duration of the project.
How much will the reimagination cost and why is BHC making a significant investment?
BHC is planning to invest $150+ million in the reimagination of the legendary property. The Charleston Place is a historic icon, and it deserves to be treated as such. Through these significant enhancements, we will elevate the experience for guests, locals and colleagues while maintaining the historic integrity of the building. It is our goal to make this one of the most beloved luxury hotels in the world and to inspire everyone who enters our doors.
Will the hotel remain open?
In order to reduce the impact on our dedicated team, local community, and loyal guests, we plan to remain open throughout the transformation by completing specific areas of the building in phases.
How will this project impact locals and guests?
We understand that executing a project of this type and scale could have some temporary challenges, but it is our goal to minimize those as much as possible. We believe the final result will be a source of continued pride for Charlestonians and visitors to our city.Â

The Shops at The Charleston Place remain an integral part of our guest and local experience, adding to the appeal of historic Charleston’s retail district. Rest assured that our team is working diligently to bring new retail offerings that will enhance the overall experience for our guests and community.
